CIAB SMS Terms

Effective Date: September 22, 2026
Last Updated: September 22, 2026

These SMS Terms explain how guests may enroll in and receive informational and promotional SMS messages from The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (“The Council,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).

1. Purpose and Scope

The Council uses SMS (Short Message Service) communications for informational purposes related to our events, initiatives, member engagement, and for promotional or marketing communications relating to our media and events.

This policy applies to all SMS communications sent via our long-code messaging system powered by Twilio and governs interactions with U.S. recipients. The Council will not send promotional or marketing SMS to recipients outside the United States unless Legal has approved the applicable jurisdiction-specific requirements.

2. Consent and Opt-In

To receive promotional or marketing SMS from the Council, you must affirmatively opt in by checking the optional SMS consent box on the applicable registration or digital event-guide enrollment form, or through another Council enrollment method that clearly requests your SMS consent.
Conference registration, conference attendance, membership, or providing a mobile number alone does not enroll you in promotional or marketing SMS. Consent is not a condition of conference registration, membership, purchase, or services.

3. Message Content

Messages sent by The Council via SMS may contain:

  • Event reminders or updates
  • Agenda modifications
  • Emergency alerts or urgent logistics information
  • Confirmations of opt-in or opt-out requests
  • Reminders of upcoming events and opportunities
  • Promotional content regarding Council events, initiatives, or media offerings

4. Opt-Out Instructions

You may opt out of future SMS messages at any time by replying STOP or using another reasonable method that clearly communicates that you do not want to receive further messages. Reply HELP for assistance or information about the SMS program.

The Council will honor an opt-out request within a reasonable time, not exceeding ten business days after receipt, and may send one final, non-promotional confirmation message.

5. Promotional Text Sending Times

Promotional or marketing SMS will be sent only between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the time zone where the event is taking place, subject to applicable legal restrictions.

6. Compliance Standards

The Council will comply with applicable international, federal, state, and local laws governing SMS communications, as well as applicable carrier and messaging-provider requirements, including requirements concerning consent, message content, opt-outs, privacy, sending times, and recordkeeping.

The Council will monitor regulatory changes and update its SMS procedures as necessary.

7. Associated Costs

Recipients may incur charges from their wireless carrier for receiving or sending text messages, including standard messaging, data, roaming, or other applicable fees.

The Council is not responsible for and will not reimburse any charges, fees, expenses, or costs incurred by recipients in connection with receiving, sending, or responding to SMS communications. Message and data rates may apply.

8. Limitation of Liability

By opting in to receive text messages from The Council, recipients acknowledge that the information provided through such messages is for informational purposes and should not be relied upon as legal, financial, business, professional, or other specialized advice.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Council, its officers, directors, volunteers, affiliates, and service providers will not be liable for any loss, damage, injury, claim, liability, cost, or expense arising from or related to:

  • Accessing, receiving, or relying on information contained in any text message;
  • Any errors, omissions, inaccuracies, or outdated information contained in text messages;
  • Decisions or actions taken or not taken based on information contained through text messages;
  • Any interruption, delay, failure of delivery, or technical issues affecting text message communications; or
  • Access to, use of, or reliance upon any third-party website, application, platform, service, content, or resource linked to or referenced in a text message.

9. Limitation of Liability

The Council will review this policy at least annually and whenever its SMS practices, applicable laws, or carrier requirements materially change. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. https://meetings.ciab.com/sms-terms
